Railroad. In the mid 1930's many railroads covered some of their newer steam powered passenger engines in sheet metal streamlining so they would carry a better image at the dawn of the diesel train age.

  • SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S "POKEY" #51/52 otherwise known as THE SAN JOAQUIN DAYLIGHT, in 1968.
Less then a year after this photo was taken, Ocklawaha declared this his private train. REASON? He was often the only one on it. Southern Pacific did it's best to run off the last passengers by not cleaning or maintaining it's cars, at the time an empty train was ground to discontinuance.

  • AMTRAK, EMPIRE BUILDER, at the start of the "Rainbow era" so called because nothing matched. Worse, the geniuses the government brought in to teach the railroads how to run a passenger train didn't know they didn't match either. The hoses and cords didn't match either, the, electrical, steam, signal and any other lines couldn't be connected between cars. To an airline guy a coach is a coach is a coach, to a railroader it's MY COACH and YOUR COACH. Thus Amtrak ran trains at -32 in NE and +120 in AZ. GREAT START BOYS.

  • The DIXIE FLYER, from 1924 to the mid 1960's would be the last train standing between Atlanta and Jacksonville. It ran Chicago-Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta-JAX-Miami, daily.
Toward the end it was a sad sight, 18-20 express, baggage and mail cars, and a lone coach, no other services available on it's overnight JAX-ATL trip. When the Government pulled all of the POSTAL BUSINESS off the trains

  • Contemporary AMTRAK lounge car, built by Pullman Standard starting in 1975 through Bombardier's Superliner II lounges in 1994. Based on a 1956 design by the Santa Fe for the El Capitan. This makes an interesting contrast to the swank surroundings of the Cedar Rapids and it's sister cars.
